UPLAND, CA (September, 7th 2010) – California Skateparks, the worldwide leader in the design and construction of skate parks and plazas, has joined forces with Street League Skateboarding as their official design/build partner to create the world’s best environments for competitive street skateboarding. CA Skateparks Owner Joe Ciaglia and Lead Designer Colby Carter have collaborated with Rob Dyrdek to design 3 unique, highly detailed, concrete street plaza environments for this year’s tour.
Skateboarding is limitless by design. Built on a foundation of progression, street skateboarding is one of the most technically intricate and dynamic sports in the world. No other past time, art form, or sport evolves the way street skateboarding does. The architecture and terrain skaters ride directly influences its progression. Whether they’re structures found in the urban environment or made for skateboarding, modern architecture has had a profound effect on the evolution of skateboarding.
California Skateparks design team creates technically detailed concrete skateboarding environments with authentic artistic architecture, while trying to replicate the magical nature of real street spots. To maximize the talents of the competitors, the Street League features have been meticulously designed to compliment the skater’s abilities and reflect the true power of street skateboarding, The plaza’s artistic design details and aesthetics will inspire creativity and help produce a high level of skateboarding.
The unique designs incorporate a diverse combination of materials, textures, colors, motifs, and paving patterns punctuated with artistic elements and landscaping. The plazas are designed and constructed using new methodologies and techniques and ingenuously integrated into the arena so that it looks and skates like a permanent structure but can be set up and taken down in 5 days.
The design of the 1st event in Glendale, Arizona was themed around the shape of a triangle which is very prominent in southwestern art. Influence by the desert southwest, colors like terra cotta, tan and clay were used for the triangular paving pattern. Drawing from the mountains surrounding the Phoenix Metro area, the ledges and rails were designed to resemble mountain peaks. The artistic elements, combined with planters filled with river rock and modern pottery accented with Agave gave the design an authentic Arizona vibe.
For the 2nd event, the design team gathered inspiration for their vision from indoor malls and entry plazas to create the setting for CB Arena in Ontario, California. Implementing a “blocky” theme, the design incorporates terracing and staggered stair sets that wrap the elevated areas. The chunky, block features with the stacked, cantilevered detailing and the color block paving pattern gives this course design a style and flavor true to southern California.
The dynamic concrete plaza designs with unique artistic features, combined with street skateboarding from the world’s best translated into an arena atmosphere for a live spectator experience will make the inaugural year of Street League Skateboarding a historical break through for skateboard fans worldwide.
