Skaters, organizers excited to see Stevens Point skate park open after years of planning
Years in the making, the Stevens Point Skate Park officially opened Thursday, with about 150 skaters attending an opening ceremony at Bukolt Park. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Stevens Point Area Skate Park Committee member Trevor Roark, “so we’re pretty excited.”
A committee was formed in 2005 to try to get a park in Stevens Point. After years of fundraising, the Common Council approved the skate park at Bukolt Park in 2008, and a design was approved earlier this year. The park ultimately cost $334,404 and was finished a week ahead of schedule. The construction by California Skateparks went smoothly, city Parks Director Tom Schrader said, and wasn’t affected by the September flooding.
Stevens Point Area Skate Park committee member Jami Gebert said moms with carloads of kids already were driving by the park in the morning, and skateboarders were lined up outside the park, waiting for it to open.
“I knew there was a need, but I didn’t realize there was this much need,” Gebert said.
Arron Edelblute, a 20-year-old student at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, said he was happy to see the park completed. He said he often skated at a park in Wisconsin Rapids but was glad to have one near the university.
“It’s about time that we have one here,” Edelblute said. “I’m glad it really got a chance to become a reality.”
Jeffrey Butler, 15 of Stevens Point, said the park is about two blocks from his home. He said now he and his friend won’t have to ride their bikes to the Plover skate park.
